GCW Scholarship Application Form

Each year the Guild of Canadian Weavers offers individual members three scholarships of $300 Canadian each:

  • Founders' Fund (in memory of Ethel Henderson, Mary Sandin, and Mary Black)

  • A.I. Scholarship (for Maritime members of GCW, which may be awarded elsewhere if there are no Maritime applicants)

  • Winnifred Mooney Scholarship.

We also offer an award dedicated to member guilds:

  • GCW Guild Scholarship in the amount of $300.00 Canadian to offset the cost of conducting a local workshop.

 Guidelines for individual members:

  • These scholarships are available to all GCW members, regardless of level of ability or of residency address.

  • The applicant shall be an individual member of the Guild of Canadian Weavers for at least two consecutive years immediately prior to the year of application.  Guilds must also have been members for two consecutive years immediately prior to the year of application.

  • Scholarships must be for either 1) attending a class of two day minimum duration, at  schools, studios, or guilds  taught by an instructor who has taught at regional/national conferences or written articles in journals, or 2) attending a conference at which recipient takes a minimum of a one day workshop. Courses must entail weaving or be weaving related.

  • The scholarship recipient must write and submit to The Bulletin Editor an in depth description of the experience for The GCW Bulletin, within six months of receiving the scholarship, accompanying photos are encouraged.

  • Applications must reach the Scholarship Chairman, by October 31, 2019, for events already attended this year or to be attended prior to the October 2019 cut off; scholarships are granted once a year.

  • Applicants may receive only one scholarship within three consecutive years.

  • Email applications will be accepted.  In case of any communication by e-mail, all notes from or to the applicant will require a separate email stating notice of receipt of each communication (a ‘read receipt’ from the email program is not adequate).

Guidelines for Guilds:

  • This scholarship is available to all GCW member guilds, regardless of guild membership size.

  • The applicant guild shall be a member of the Guild of Canadian Weavers for at least two consecutive years of membership immediately prior to the year of application.

  • Scholarship must be for conducting a workshop of two day minimum duration, taught by an instructor who has taught at regional/national conferences or written articles in journals. Courses must entail weaving or be weaving related and should be of recognizable validity in content.

  • The scholarship recipient must write and submit to the Bulletin Editor an in depth description of the workshop for The GCW Bulletin, within six months of receiving the scholarship, accompanying photos are encouraged.

  • Applications must reach the Scholarship Chairman, by October 31, 2019, for workshops already conducted this year or to be conducted prior to the October 2019 cut off; scholarships are granted once a year.

Items to submit as application:

1. A completed application form.

2. A photocopy/scanned copy of the description of either (a) the selected two day class, including instructor information, or (b) the conference  title, date, location, etc., and the chosen workshop and instructor.

3. A few words about why the applicant chose the course and its likely benefits for the applicant or guild.

4. A proof of registering and a statement by the applicant affirming attendance or for guilds, proof that the workshop occurred.  This is required upon completion of the activity and is the applicant’s responsibility to forward.
